Welcome to the 2026 Bald Blair Angus Bull Sale!

On behalf of my family and the team at Bald Blair, I would like to welcome those returning to Bald Blair and those visiting for the first time.

Since 1898 our family have been breeding angus cattle at Bald Blair, 10kms East of Guyra on the Northern Tablelands of NSW. In 1908 the Bald Blair stud was registered and in 1919 the Angus Society of Australia was formed and Bald Blair was a founding member. For 118 years this herd has continued to produce Bulls for its own use and for broader industry. This is our 54th consecutive year of on property Bull Sales. Rain, Hail or shine or drought the business of bull breeding carries on through time. Continuous genetic gain is our driving purpose.

Now in 2026 Bald Blair Angus will have on offer about 90 Bulls. There are 77 Bulls Rising 2 Years of Age and 20 Bulls Rising 18 Months of. Age.

This is, once again a quality bull sale team, with a large crop to choose from and diversity of bloodlines on offer for you to choose from.

Our bull sale team is Parent Verified.

The bull sale team has been fertility tested by our local vet.

Our breeding programme at Bald Blair is market focused where progeny of these bulls are most likely to go. Fertility, Calving Ease, Growth, Carcase, Structure, Temperament, Longevity and diversity of Pedigree are all important in bringing together this sale team. We continue to use the latest technologies, including Genomically enhanced EBV’s made available to us in the Trans Tasman Cattle Evaluation (TACE) to assist in our breeding decisions. We continue our on going supply of Feeder steers to Stanbrokes Rangers Valley Feedlot as we continue the redevelopment of our commercial operation.

Over the past few years, we have spent considerable amount of time inspecting bulls,in Australia and US and planning future breeding programmes for our herd. You will see a greater emphasis on feed Efficiency in this years catalogue, an addition to our programme that takes years to influence. We continue our collaboration with AGBU and UNE regarding Methane Emissions testing, with the goal of these programmes to develop Methane EBV’s in the not to distant future. We these EBV’s will be added to our selection criteria moving forward.

Set a maximum bid on a lot and let the computer bid on your behalf.

A max bid can be placed prior to or after an auction commencing and allows you to set a maximum price on any lot(s), letting the computer bid on your behalf up to the price you have nominated.

The advantage of setting a max bid prior to the auction is that you do not have to connect to the auction for it to take effect, meaning you can set your maximum price once a catalogue is published.

Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation

We work very closely with Dr Leisa Brown BVSc Hons  the owner and manager of Guyra District Veterinary Services. Leisa is a member of the Australian Cattle Veterinarians (ACV) Association. Each year before our annual on property bull sale, Leisa conducts a ACV Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation on each bull listed in the bull sale catalogue. This test includes:

• A physical examination,

• Examination of the reproductive organs,

• Semen collection and assessment of gross motility,

• Semen morphology – with samples being assessed by an accredited morphologist at the Australian Veterinary Semen Morphology.

Leisa is always on call for any other cattle husbandry requirements when required and we greatly appreciate her skill and availability. Click here for more details.

The Angus Parentage Assurance program highlights sale or semen catalogues listed on the Angus Australia website by vendors who have invested in DNA testing for parentage verification, and who in turn, have improved the integrity of the pedigree, genetic condition and TACE EBV information that is displayed for any Angus animals or semen that they are offering for sale.

The parentage assurance program has two different categories, Angus Sire Assured and Angus Parentage Assured.

Angus Sire Assured applies to sale or semen catalogues where all lots have been DNA sire verified, whereas Angus Parentage Assured applies to sale and semen catalogues where all lots have been DNA parent verified (both sire and dam).

Looking After Your Bull – Guidelines

To give your new bull the best chance of success in your breeding program, we recommend the following management steps:

  1. Transport & Transition
  • Allow bulls time to settle quietly into their new environment.
  • Avoid immediately introducing them to large mobs.
  • MLA Transporting Bulls Information: CLICK HERE

  1. Quarantine & Observation
  • Quarantine new bulls for 5–7 days where practical
  • Ensure access to clean water and suitable fodder or good quality pasture.

  1. Joining Preparation
  • If a single bull is purchased it is good to put him with a few quiet steers or heifers prior to joining to help them settle in.
  • If multiple bulls are purchased, allow them room to establish their group hierarchy and good feed in the lead up to joining.

  1. Joining Ratio
  • Joining yearling bulls (12 months of age) at no more than 25 cows per bull.
  • Joining 18 month year old bulls at no more than 40 cows per bull.
  • Joining bulls rising 2 years old standard convention is 1 bull to 50 cows or 2%.

  1. Ongoing Health
  • All bulls leaving Bald Blair having been ear notch tested to identify whether any persistently infected animals. There are no PI’s in the herd.
  • Bald Blair has a complete herd vaccination protocol in place for pestivirus, leptospirosis, vibriosus and tick fever.
  • It is your responsibility to maintain these vaccinations by way of annual booster to ensure continued safeguarding of your herd.
  • Check bulls regularly during joining for soundness and have a replacement bull ready.

Following these guidelines will help ensure your Bald Blair bull remains healthy, fertile, and productive for years to come.
