The Boundary Rider's Report June 2025

The Boundary Rider’s Report June 2025

Welcome

We are coming down from the high of the World Angus Forum and enjoying all the podcasts, photos and newspaper articles about the event.  See links below.  It has been very wet here and we are experiencing some cold weather now.  We are full swing into bull sale preparation, but have stopped to enjoy a visit from The Land journalists and fix up some pastures with a drone and more. I have even had time to check a few boundaries and make necessary repairs as required.  There are heaps of events, courses and podcast recommendations in this report, so please read on until the end.

Did you know you can set a maximum bid on a lot and let the computer bid on your behalf.  A max bid can be placed prior to or after an auction commencing and allows you to set a maximum price on any lot(s), letting the computer bid on your behalf up to the price you have nominated.

The advantage of setting a max bid prior to the auction is that you do not have to connect to the auction for it to take effect, meaning you can set your maximum price once a catalogue is published.

Droughts and Flooding Rains

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the farms recovering from the devastating floods in the Port Macquarie, Kempsey and Taree catchments.  We are also thinking of the farmers in South Australia, Victoria and Southern NSW experiencing the debilitating drought.  While we have not experienced flood damage we have well and truly experienced the 2019 drought which is still very raw in our hearts and minds.  We just want to acknowledge how tough it is for many farming families at the moment.

I am sure those affected by the floods and droughts are aware of this, but for the rest of us: A list of emergency contacts, health and wellbeing services and other useful links are available on the
NSW Farmers website

NSW Farmers Natural Disaster Relief: Donations

If you are considering support for farmers or those in regional communities affected by natural disasters (flood, fire and drought) there are a number of registered charities that can be contacted. There are specific charities for farmers, and other charities that support rural communities more broadly.  NSW Farmers does not specifically endorse any single charity, however the links below to registered charities may be worth investing. https://www.nswfarmers.org.au/NSWFA/NSWFA/Content/ContactUs/Natural_Disaster_Relief.aspx?hkey=1be622db-5ca6-4070-b602-6bdb53c938b8

Season

The front of Bald Blair has received 426mm, Kolora 549mm, Gatwood 525mm and Aberfoyle 563mm all year to date.  Dams are mostly full and the catchment is full - there is water flowing out of the paddocks - we are getting bogged and need to make immediate repairs to the bridge at Bald Blair to get out the back. http://www.bom.gov.au/watl/

Markets

The sheep market has certainly picked up - we sold 21 lambs last week for $220 and have just crutched (thank you Jack Lockyer) the remaining 400 lambs yesterday to sell soon.

The cattle market is still holding strong.

Cattle

Freeze branding of the bull sale team continues this week.  Last week semen morphology testing of the bull sale team was conducted by Jess from Guyra District Veterinary Services as part of the Bull Check program. This is an extremely important part of ensuring we offer fertility tested bulls that are in the best working order for our clients.  To learn more about Bull Check CLICK HERE

Weeds

We continue to spray nodding thistles! The mild weather, the lack of frosts has provided them with the ideal opportunity to just keep growing and growing.  The quick spray was never removed from the back of the ute and doesn’t look like it is being lifted anytime soon. So spraying weeds is well and truly part of the weekly schedule going into winter and we can only hope we get some good frosts to stall the nodding thistles before spring.

The Angus Family Playbook: How to Build a Business, Raise Leaders & Think Generationally with Josie Angus - Angus Pastoral Co

AgriCoach Wealth & Wisdom Podcast by The Financial Bloke

What happens when a family doesn’t just talk about legacy — but builds it, lives it, and scales it?

In this milestone conversation, Ben Law sits down with Josie Angus of Angus Pastoral Company and Signature Beef — a fourth-generation cattle producer who, with her husband Blair, has built a vertically integrated operation spanning 162,000 hectares, 35,000 head of cattle, and a $37 million on-farm abattoir (the first in Queensland in 30 years).  But this episode isn’t just about scale. It’s about the decisions, mindsets and family dynamics that make multigenerational success possible.

READING

The Angus History Book

Polled black cattle have been in existence in Scotland for over 1000 years; in fact nobody really knew where they came from. With in-depth research, three experienced authors have slowly pieced together not only the origins of the Aberdeen-Angus but a deep history into early agriculture, travelling through industrial revolutions, wars, economic crisis and what can only be determined as fashions, all of which played a role in the formation of the breed. It also includes the earliest importations of Aberdeen-Angus into all the world’s major beef producing countries. What has emerged is a highly detailed history of a breed of cattle that went from very humble beginnings to the greatest breed on Earth.
