The Boundary Rider's Report August 2021

Bald Blair Angus

Welcome to the August 2021 Boundary Rider’s Report

Bull Sale THANK YOU

Thank you to all the bidders and underbidders at our 49th Annual on property Bull Sale.
The last of our bulls have left Bald Blair for their new homes.

Thank you to Rangers Valley, for providing the Black Onyx Beef for lunch; MBl Score 5+. To Keith Howe and his team at Rangers Valley, we acknowledge your support of us and many fellow Angus breeders around the country in our difficult hours through 2019 for taking our stock early and finishing our stock for your branded beef programs. Thankyou.

Thankyou Peter & Sharon Dundon & Emily Brett our Chef’s team

Thank you Mara Grills, Sally Geere, Erica Ulrick, Maare Foster and Mel Morgan and the Bald Blair School P&C catering team; it is always a pleasure to deal with you. Thankyou for looking after us.

Thank you to this year's bull sale team, these bulls are special in many ways, mostly for their resilience in getting through a really tough time. They were fed through the drought on DDG pellets 3 times a week, and were allowed access to what we thought at the time was the best of our available feed left. They have been finished on DDG at 1% bodywt per hd per day plus Sorghum Silage grown here on Bald Blair over the past 12 months.

Thankyou to the Bald Blair Team, Tom Cleaver (1st Sale), Jonathan Woods, James Lenehan, Dan Klabe, Suzie White, Jack McCook & our eldest son Abbott White, and younger son Arthur for your work pre-sale and on sale day.

The time line for breeding bulls is a long one, the decisions we make in the next few weeks and months will bear fruit in three years time. Breeding bulls requires patience, good stockmanship and a very sound understanding of the breeding decision support technologies that are available.

Our goal is to keep getting better with our decisions on breeding Angus cattle.

Dick Whale, IBMS thankyou for your support and for challenging us to keep getting better.

Thank you Struan and Moncia – Stud Stock Sales/AuctionsPlus

Thank you Elders Team; Paul Harris, Mark Atkins, Craig Waters, Terry Williams, Wayne Jenkins, Brian Kennedy, Lincoln McKinlay , Ashlee Lance and Stephanie Young.

Thank you Paul Dooley, Auctioneer.

Thank you Dr Leisa Brown, Guyra Vets.

What's on our plate:

Audits: It was a huge relief to pass our Cattlecare/LPA QA audit on the 17th June. The AusMeat auditor went through our documents and systems with a fine tooth comb! We also underwent a JBS Audit on 30 June.- Yes we passed it too!

Carbon Accounting - What is your carbon footprint?
We participated in a project with the Southern New England Landcare to establish what our carbon footprint is. I can assure we have one. We worked with Integrity Ag & Environment and worked through the numbers to come up with a figure of net emissions of 2080 tonnes of CO2 equivalent for our beef and sheep enterprises at Bald Blair. This represents the kilograms of greenhouse gases (converted to CO2 equivalents) per kg of live weight or greasy wool sold. So we are not carbon neutral - but at least we know where we are at and what we can work on to become carbon neutral eg: solar conversion! We plan to increase the depth of our carbon measurements from 10cm to a greater depth to continue to monitor our carbon sequestration in the soil.
