The Boundary Rider's Report October 2022

Thank you for taking the time to check out our latest Boundary Rider’s Report.

Season: We are enjoying a spectacular spring! The clover is unprecedented and the level of water lying around is an interesting problem to have. The creek rises very quickly after rain and the bridge has been underwater a number of times and we have to wait for the water to subside before we can get out the back of Bald Blair to check stock.

Survey: Thank you to the people that have replied to our 2022 Communications Survey. We would really appreciate your response to our survey, so we can get a better understanding of what you would like to hear from us and how you would like to receive this information. We will send you a Bald Blair Angus trucking cap and stubby holder to show our appreciation for your time. Here is the link https://forms.gle/iMcBsy1spPLM6Lun6

Artificial Insemination: We have completed the first round of Artificial Insemination of our stud heifer and cows. It has been great to work with our team and the team at Bovine Breeders to get this crucial job done in our breeding calendar. It has been great having the boys home for school holidays to help out, plus Phoebe on work placement. We have enjoyed some early starts and working on public holidays. To keep team spirit high we have provided bacon and egg rolls, pancakes with blueberries for breakfast, homegrown lamb & salad rolls for lunches and lollies - lots of lollies crushside.

We will now work with our maiden dam group and complete our embryo program, while watching for returns over the next few weeks. The bulls are out with our commercial dams and we will be keeping a close eye on them over the coming weeks, we use a combination of bulls, yearlings, 18 mth old and 2 yr Old Bulls.

Rangers Valley Visit: We were delighted to host a visit from Rangers Valley Cattle Station. It was great to catch up with Keith Howe and Andrew Moore, plus their special guests from Europe. It was very interesting to talk about the EU market, life in Monaco over some home grown lamb sandwiches in our corrugated iron shed. We were able to take the guests for a ride in our farm buggies through the rain to check out the cattle and property.

Gallagher TWR-5: We organised some training with our Gallagher rep - Nic Crompton on the Gallagher TWR-5, a weigh scale and data collector. It was a good opportunity to bring our team up to date on what more we can do with this essential bit of kit and reduce pen and paper crushside, improve accuracy and have access to more data on each animal as they come into the yards. For more information: https://store.am.gallagher.com/am/au/en_AU/animal-management/weighing-and-eid/weigh-scales-and-data-collectors/twr-5-weigh-scale%2C-data-collector-%26-eid-tag-reader/p/G02606

Clipex: We also enjoyed an induction demonstration from Clipex for a new sheep handler we plan to install into our new sheep yards when they are rebuilt in January. We have done some minor upgrades to the sheep yards, with a drenching race and water points, however the drafting race and yards are original and need a complete overhaul to improve efficiency and safety for sheep and our team.

Numnuts: We are also looking forward to using our new lamb cradle for lamb marking. Thank you Jonathon Woods for the use of your cradle for the last season. We will again be using numnuts https://numnuts.store/ to ensure the marking process is as pain free as possible for the lambs and they recover faster.

Bloat: We have been managing bloat as best we can, with bloat licks, bloat oil in troughs, green feed lick, access to barley straw and combining sheep & cattle grazing together. If you would like more information check out this webinar link https://youtu.be/UhErZwuXWoM

This is a conversation Starter: We put our hand up for a collaboration with AuctionsPlus and TradeMutt and were able to get a bundle of free work shirts for our team. There is no doubt the shirts are a conversation starter and are being proudly worn by our team - go Sam! Part of the deal was to get a photo and share on social media, which we have done with AuctionsPlus and TradeMutt - well done to them for making this opportunity available to us. https://www.tiacs.org/

Trees: During the drought we lost trees and are now in the process of cutting down the dead trees and mulching or burning them. A row of poplars along our drive way have been mulched ready for new plantings of liquid ambers. The tree guard of mixed natives near the bull selling complex has been removed by an excavator and plans are being made to build a new fodder shed. We have mixed natives at the local nursery ready to plant and we will assess last year's tree guards to see if they need replanting as well as planting out our new tree guards.
