Thank you for taking the time to check out our latest Boundary Rider’s Report.

We have enjoyed a brief break with the caravan and kids to the Gold Coast for a school cycling event. It was lovely to get away to watch the boys ride their bikes, challenge themselves with rain, mud, mechanical issues and hot competition.


Seasonal Update
As this Boundary riders report goes to print, the BOM has finally convinced themselves that a 3rd La Nina event is going to influence our near term weather systems. What does this really mean to us. More Water, our grounds are well and truly saturated. Our water table looks pretty much tanked up here, the water in our bores is only a foot from the surface; it is unprecedented, I haven’t seen it like this. I and most of you have seen the alternative only a few years ago, I prefer this with its new set of challenges. On the ground, clover is everywhere, and one of our looming challenges is bloat. 


Lambs & Steers
This month, the last of our last season lambs have been marketed. The market in recent weeks has come back a bit. Anyway, they are gone. The new season lambs are here, they are looking good. The first of our 2021 drop steers have been marketed to Rangers Valley Feedlot. These steers are all of 14 months old, by Bald Blair high marbling bulls. We look forward to watching these young animals grow out. We acknowledge the support of Rangers Valley has provided to us over the years. It is our intention to provide beef at next year's bull sale from these steers.


Joining Season
In the last month we continue calving cows, and tagging those calves, although 90% of the cows have calved. We have weaned all our Autumn drop calves and finished preg testing these dams. Our mind is now well and truly focused on the breeding season ahead. I am currently planning all the matings, sires have been selected, AI is being programmed into our calendar, all supplements and barley straw purchased. 


FMD
We have been monitoring the FMD situation and have been logging into the information session provided by the MLA and learning as much as we can about our preparedness. In an effort to ensure we are doing what we can, we have commenced the NLIS audit of our two PICs and have consolidated them into one and ensured the devices registered to our PIC match the animals we have on farm. 


PIC
If you are local to our area and have a couple of farms, the other thing to keep in mind is the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services have a Routine Stock Movement Permit that you can provide authorities. This permit applies to routine movements of stock between two or more properties owned or occupied by the same person and are issued to local stock owners annually.

LSS
We mention
e d some time ago that we would host another Low Stress Stock Handling School with Chook Kealey. We have not been able to find a date that suits us both for this year. However we are planning to find a date in February 2023. If you want to attend a school earlier, Max Newsome from LLS is organising a number of schools - so touch base with him. Otherwise we will keep you posted on our school. The plan is to have young people attending and while this school is not in school holidays we hope it is of importance enough for them to attend if they can.

We have collected semen from a couple of our leading bulls, including Bald Blair Sterling S86, for our own commercial heifer AI program and to provide to clients. 

Introducing this fantastic new sire to the Bald Blair breeding team. One of the best Paratrooper sons bred on Bald Blair. A young sire we consider worthy of Stud use, for his great balance of EBV’s from Birth to Final weight, balanced with a good set of carcase EBVs also. He will be used across the herd in AI this spring, on heifer and cows to get a good idea of his progeny performance. Commercial Semen is available from this young bull.
